What is a French Drain System?

A French drain is a sloping perforated pipe that is buried in gravel to direct water away from your property. It is a proven solution to flooding gardens or pooling water as well as being simple to install, cost effective and efficient. Where traditional box drains only in one spot, french drains collect rainwater along the full length of the drain. This is much more preferable for your lawn as there won’t be any dip from pooled water in the lawn around the drain as you get from box drains.

What are the signs that I need a French drain?

What starts as some surface pooling in your garden can actually lead to some serious damage to your property including structural damage. Poor drainage can be identified by:

  • Water pooling on your lawn
  • Water flowing over your gutters
  • Soil erosion
  • Top soil moving when it’s raining
  • Damp stains on your walls or floors
  • Cracks in your retaining walls
  • Foul odours

What Are the Benefits of Installing a French Drain?

French drains offer a versatile and effective solution for improving drainage around your home. There are a number of benefits including the following:

Improves drainage: Standing water can become a breeding ground for insects like mosquitos, risking the health of your loved ones and garden.

Protects the Foundations of Your Home: By directing rain and surface water away from your home, a French drain helps prevent water damage that can lead to destructive cracks and major foundation damage, causing you to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs.

Versatile: French drains can be installed in various locations including around the foundation of your house, retaining walls, driveway or pool.

Increased Property Value: A well-maintained drainage system can improve your home's value when it comes time to sell. French drains add structural integrity and improve landscape aesthetics.

Improves Your Home's Health: French drains help prevent mould, mildew and erosion, ensuring a healthier living environment for you and your family.

Minimising toxic runoff: While fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides have many benefits for your lawn and garden, they are filled with harmful ingredients. If these ingredients get into our water systems, people and animals can quickly become sick. By installing a French drain, stormwater and groundwater are protected from the soil by pipes and landscape fabric, moving directly to the waterway without picking up harmful toxins.

How is a French Drain installed?

Whilst we have said that the installation of french drains is simple, we mean for the professionals! To install a french drain, our drainage experts start by analysing your garden for the most effective placement of the drain for optimum drainage efficiency.

Our GRH plumbers then execute the following steps:

  1. Dig the trench
  2. Arrange the filter fabric in the trench with enough to wrap around the pipe
  3. Put a small amount of gravel in at the bottom
  4. Install the perforated pipe with at least 1% downward slope
  5. Cover the pipe with more gravel over the pipe and wrap the fabric around the pipe and gravel
  6. Finish with gravel or soil if you wish for turf to be planted over the pipe

What’s the Difference Between a French Drain and a Trench Drain?

This is a question we often get asked, so let’s discuss the differences between french and trench drains.

Firstly, french drains are designed to manage and redirect groundwater. It helps prevent soggy yards, basement flooding, and foundation problems caused by excess moisture below the surface. French drains are typically hidden underground.

Whereas trench drains are to remove surface water quickly. It helps prevent pooling and erosion caused by rain or runoff on paved surfaces, driveways, patios, and walkways. Trench drains are a surface level channel that is visible.
